Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning
The authors suggest that the very process of asking your brain to retrieve information enhances memory. Thus, in order to put and keep information in long term memory, we need to retrieve it frequently. This is essentially the idea behind spaced repetition in which people use flashcards or other devices to review material periodically. Having read this book, I have begun teaching the practices put forth by the authors as well as creating resources for my students that support spaced repetition.

Mindset by Carol Dweck
Originally published in 2006, this book is a classic tale of changing one’s beliefs. Many students believe that math is an intrinsic ability which they, unfortunately, do not possess. This is what Carol Dweck calls a fixed mindset. In her book, she suggests a more adaptive approach to learning is the growth mindset in which proficiency is regarded as the result of effortful learning. I work hard to foster a growth mindset in my students as well as myself.
